1. The One-Minute TIP

Take small steps, but take them every single day. Take the
smallest, safest, easiest step you can, but keep moving in
the direction you want to go. If you like the results,
simply do it again tomorrow, and the day after that, and
again the day after that. To achieve great things, keep
walking, one step at a time, in the direction of your goal.

2. Welcome Notes

Recently, someone sent an email asking if I read fiction,
along with the history and self-help books I recommend, and
I have to admit I don't read as many novels as I should.
For many years, I read almost no fiction, then got hooked
on the old Sherlock Holmes novels and read all four of
them, plus the 56 short stories one summer.

Now, I read Tom Clancy and a few others, and this week I
read Mario Puzo's, "The Family." It is not great literature,
but it is a delightful read and a great way to spend a
few hours!

I also re-read Robert Allen's, "Multiple Streams of
Income", and I highly recommend it. Every family must
diversify their income beyond a primary career or
profession, and Allen's wisdom has helped many people take
those critical first steps. Get it, read it, implement it!

And, here's a terrible statistic. This week I heard that
only 3% of Americans have a library card! While I can't
verify that number, it shocked me! Get a card and USE your
public library!

And two brief business items. First, we are considering
"upgrading" and publishing TIPS as an "html" newsletter,
with graphics and color. There is some controversy about
that, and if you have a preference (for our current "plain
text" or for a more colorful html version) I'd like to hear
from you. Send advice and comments to me at:

Finally, we are still getting new subscribers as a result
of various viruses on the internet. They "forge" your
return address and sign you up for our newsletter without
your knowledge or consent. If this has happened to you, we
apologize. There is no way we can tell a genuine
subscription request from a fake one. Obviously, I hope
you enjoy our weekly "TIPS for Extraordinary Living", but
if you wish to unsubscribe, simply click on the link at the
bottom of every issue.

3:  Take One Small Step

One of the most common challenges clients bring to coaching
is the question of how to achieve their most important
goals. They have important personal or business goals but
they are not achieving them, and in fact, they often tell
me they are not even getting started. How to help them?

There are many possible reasons for this, of course, but
the reasons "why" are rarely important. Who cares "why" we
don't make progress? The key is to find a SOLUTION and
start moving forward. Here are three of the most common
solutions we find:

1. Clarify the REAL desire.

Clients often assume that a coach will be a huge fan of
"goal setting" and are surprised to learn that I'm actually
rather suspicious of most goal-setting programs. Now,
obviously having clear goals is a good thing - I've even
written a book on setting value-driven goals - but most
people spend far too much time setting false goals.

We've all done it. It's New Year's, and we "have to"
create some targets for the coming year . Or, the boss
sends us to a "motivational seminar" and we are told to
come back with a set of written goals, so we do what we're
told. Or, to pick on some other common themes, we know we
"should" lose weight, quit smoking or spend less, so we set
that as a "goal". Now wonder we fail!

Those are NOT true goals! Those are merely exercises to
sooth our boss, our spouse or our conscience!

The solution is obvious: Define what you REALLY want and
set THAT as your goal. Most people are actually pretty
good at achieving goals IF the goal is realistic, IF they
have a clear plan, and IF they really, really want it.

2. Create a SYSTEM for achievement.

Weight Watchers(tm), Alcoholic Anonymous and other support
groups work because they create an environment where we are
supported and encouraged to succeed, every step of the way.

Too many people set goals and try to achieve them in
isolation. Human beings are social creatures and we do our
best when our friends are cheering us on, offering support,
giving advice and making it easy for us to succeed.

Surround yourself with people, posters, music, tools and
models that make it easier to succeed than to fail!
Arrange your life and social situations so that every thing
around you (your "Eco-System") pulls your forward! And, if
you would like more detail on this, I've written a book on
creating Personal Eco-Systems(tm) that support us to be
strong, persistent and successful.

3. Take SMALL steps.

Too often we try to take giant leaps, when we are far more
likely to get to the top of the mountain in a series of
small, incremental steps.

Giant leaps are fun and dramatic, but they can also be up-
setting. They change our world and confuse people. That's
one reason many people, after losing weight in a hurry,
gain it back just as quickly. They've changed "who they
are", including their body image, their ward-robe, diet and
lifestyle, and the brain naturally misses the old, familiar

The wisdom of experience tells us to slow down and take
smaller steps.

Today, take one small step in the direction you want to go.
Save a dollar, if saving money is one of your goals. Skip
desert if losing weight is a goal. Compliment your spouse
if you want a closer, more loving relationship.

4. Quotes of the Week

"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the
whole staircase, just take the first step."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that is
                                           -- Mme. Du Deffand

"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among
the stars."
                                           -- Les Brown

"You don't get to choose how you're going to die, or when.
You can only decide how you're going to live. Now."
                                           -- Joan Baez

5. Strictly Business:  Ya Gotta Have a Plan!

This week I had a remarkable conversation with a woman who
has built, and nearly lost, a great business. She launched
it in 1996 with little more than a dream and a few dollars
in her "hobby" account, and quickly built it to almost 17
million dollars a year in sales. Unfortunately, this year
her sales will be about half of what they were last year.

This terrible loss has nothing to do with the "dot-com"
depression or the economy. It has everything to do with
the fact that she never made the shift from doing it all
herself to being the leader and manager of a thriving

Without a plan and an organizational chart, she continues
to be the driving force behind every sale, every decision,
and every innovation. She works horrendous hours,
sometimes even packing and shipping orders herself on the
weekends! Sometimes she micro-manages; at other times she
pulls back so dramatically that instead of delegating, she
abdicates. No wonder her employees are frustrated and her
business is falling apart!

EVERY business needs an organizational chart! EVERY
business, even a child's lemonade stand, needs to know who
squeezes the lemons, who handles sales, and who does the
accounting. Sometimes, in a micro-business, it may all be
done by the same person, but each ROLE is distinct,
separate, and specialized, and this should be recognized
and documented.

EVERY business must know who their best customers are.
EVERY business must have a marketing plan, a budget, and an
R&D team. EVERY business needs a business plan that is
current and reviewed often.

6. Resources and Tools for YOUR Success!

#1 A Jim Rohn Special
A Full Year of Continuous and Never-ending Growth!

I'm a huge fan of Jim's work over the years, and this is a
fantastic opportunity to get the benefits of individual
coaching at a fraction of the cost! I participated in a
"beta" test of this program last year, and it is fantastic!
Since the launch of the program, over 99% of the enrollees
have stayed committed to a plan of consistent and
continuous growth in their personal and professional lives,
and that is extraordinary! This is GOOD! For what averages
out to $29 a month for a Silver Membership or $46 for a
Gold, you receive 12 Pillars of Success, 52 weekly email
trainings, a 600+ page downloadable workbook, 12 monthly
conference calls (including Zig Ziglar, Loral Langemeier,
Jim Rohn, etc.), plus thousands of dollars worth of Jim
Rohn's CD's, DVD's and books for your library. There is
even a Bronze package that averages out to ONLY $12 a
month! If you are determined to change your life and
achieve your goals, this is a FANTASTIC opportunity!

#2 Tools for the Mind(tm)

The feedback about my new site has been phenomenal! We've
tried to collect and organize the BEST resources available
on the web to help you enrich your life, build your
business and reach your goals. I have personally used (or
had clients use) every single book, tape and tool on the
site and they carry my personal endorsement. These are not
"all" the tools on the web, but these are the best I've
found. Do you want more sales? To lose weight, quit
smoking or set (and achieve) other goals? We have tools to
help! I hope you'll visit:

#3 Transform Your Life!
The Sedona Method

People ask me how they can "really explode my success and
change my life", and after telling them there is no magic
bullet, I refer them to The Sedona Method(tm). This series
of tapes and workbooks is, without doubt, the MOST
successful, thorough and powerful program for taking charge
of your life that I have ever seen. I wish I had written
it! You can get a FREE initial tape to sample the program,
and for goodness sake, sign up for their free newsletter!
Their simple observation that, 'Happiness is free' opened
my eyes and was the beginning of a remarkable journey. Very
powerful stuff!

The program is not simple or cheap - you expected a quick
pill? It is comprehensive, orderly, and effective. Both
Mary and I have used it, and it works! Highly recommended!

Make Money From Your Current Website!
(It's getting MUCH easier!)

I'm a "raving fan" of this system that makes it EASY to
sell my tapes, register people for my classes, and create
my affiliate program, and I want to give you a free tour -
and you can use the system FREE for 30 days! The owner is
Don Schnure, and he has an amazing "system" for helping me
make money with my website and newsletter, without having
to be a techno-wizard. I use the shopping cart, the
affiliate program (took less than an hour to set up!), and
the broadcast modules. It's so cool! Click here for the tour.

7. Humor:    Medical Chart Absurdities

Ever wonder what your doctor REALLY writes in your chart?
Here are a few gems written, we must assume, by absent-
minded professionals in a hurry! Several people have sent
similar lists over the years, and whether they are true or
not, I hope you enjoy them! (I love this kind of word-play
and enjoy collecting more for my library - send `em in!)

1.  Patient has chest pain if she lies on her left side for over a year.
2.  0n the second day the knee was better, and on the third day it disappeared.
3.  The patient has been depressed since she began seeing me in I993.
4.  Discharge status: Alive but without my permission.
5.  The patient has no previous history of suicides.
6.  Patient has left white blood cells at another hospital.
7.  Patient had waffles for breakfast and anorexia for lunch.
8.  Healthy-appearing, decrepit 69-year old male, mentally alert but forgetful.
9.  She is numb from her toes down.
10.  While in ER, she was examined, X-rated and sent home.
11.  The skin was moist and dry.
12.  Occasional, constant infrequent headaches.
13.  Patient was alert and unresponsive.

       until she got a divorce.

Be kind to yourself and to someone else, and have a
wonder-FULL week!
