1. The One-Minute TIP

If you can read this, you are alive, you have a computer,
and you are free. You are one of the luckiest, most blessed
people on earth. Give thanks! Enjoy life, hug your loved
ones, declare victory and celebrate the joys of all you
have. Then (and only then) set some interesting,
challenging goals and (just for fun) go see what you are
truly capable of achieving!

2. Welcome Notes

I love the "lazy, hazy, crazy" days of summer! (Wasn't that
a magnificent song by Nat King Cole?) What I also enjoy are
the chances to dream and plan for the future.

I'll have details in the coming weeks, but while most
people set goals and plan their year at New Year's, for me
summer has always seemed more natural. I love using long
summer days to dream, scheme and plan. During the summer
anything seems possible, it's only a matter of figuring out
how to get it done. Use the summer to dream big dreams!

And, watch for announcements of coming attractions! In
August I've arranged a block-buster teleclass on attracting
clients for you professionals out there. I've got a new
book we'll be announcing soon, and I'll be announcing
teleclasses on personal finances, setting and achieving
goals, and a Coaching Group Intensive for low-cost, high-
benefit personal coaching. As they say, "lottsa stuff is on
the way!"

Finally, I was delighted at the response to last week's

publish reviews and recommendations of the "best books" for
personal growth, business and fun! Life is too short, and
it's too hard to learn all the lessons on our own!

3:  Is It Enough Yet? 

How do we know when we've won? How do we know when we've
achieved our most important goals and have the life we
truly want?

Too many of us are chasing a finish line that is always
moving away from us. We work as hard as we can, running
faster every day, trying to reach a moving target. This
"treadmill way of life" isn't working, and the sad part is
that too many people either don't realize they are playing
a game they can't win, or they don't know how to quit. They
don't know how to get off the treadmill, quit the game and
do something more rewarding.

Specific, measurable goals give us clear finish lines. Well-
written goals tell us when we have lost those ten pounds,
when we have increased our income by 10%, or purchased the
new car we've wanted.

Poorly written goals, however, can be a set-up for constant
and never-ending frustration. Goals to earn "more" can
create more stress than motivation. How much is "more?"
What is "enough?"

While I believe in the power of clear, specific goals (ask
my clients!), I also know that poorly defined goals can
have harmful side-effects. Poorly written goals create a
sense of disappointment rather than the sense of power we
all want.

Poorly written goals make us imagine that the future will
be "better," which suggests that the present is "bad."
Poorly written goals suggest that WE are not good enough,
or don't have enough, or aren't doing enough and we "MUST"
reach our goals to become "better." Nothing could be
further from the truth!

The sense that "if I achieve my goals life will be better"
is a lie!

Read that again. Achieving your goals will NOT make life
better! Ask the millionaires who have committed suicide.
Ask Judy Garland or Elvis Presley or Howard Hughes if being
brilliant, rich and famous brought them joy! Life does NOT
work that way!

Yes, reaching goals is fun and rewarding. Setting clear
goals can focus our efforts and produce amazing results -
consider Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France this week!
His performance is definitely NOT the result of idle
curiosity! He has goals, he trains, and he is accomplishing
something amazing!

But achieving goals does not bring happiness. Having more
money will not make you happy. Losing weight will not make
you happy. A new car will not make you happy.

Happiness is an inside job. It is an attitude and as
philosophers from Socrates to Jesus to William James,
Abraham Lincoln, Viktor Frankl, Marianne Williamson and
Wayne Dyer have all pointed out, our inner attitudes do not
depend (how could they?) on our outer circumstances.

Yes - use goals to enrich your life! Of course set goals!
Set smart, intelligent, specific, worthwhile goals. They
will improve your performance. Goals clarify your values
and help you manage your time. Goals help us discover our
potential and find out how far we can go and what we can
achieve, and that is a wonderful part of "the good life."

But never pretend that having more stuff will make you
rich. Never get confused that achieving goals or having
more money or more fame, or looking younger will make you
happy if your spirit is sad.

If you can read this, you are alive, you have a computer,

5. Strictly Business:   Why Are You In Business?

In my experience, one of the best predictors of long-term
business success are the questions, "Why are you doing
this? Why are you in business?"

This week, three different people contacted me for help in
making more money. They wanted "wealth coaching" to make
their business more profitable. In all three cases, I
turned them down. Making money is too easy. By itself it's
just not worth the time and trouble to go after it directly.
As Emerson said, "sometimes money costs too much."

Profits are the necessary and delightful SIDE BENEFIT or
"EXTRA" of a well-run business. Profits and dividends and
cash in your pocket come from serving your customer very,
very well at a price that is a "bargain" for them and
provides a nice profit for you.

There are only a few reasons to go into business. One is to
do something you love, and another is to serve customers.
Everything else is simply a matter of arranging the details.

Yes, a good business plan is essential! You need to know
who your customers are, what they want, and how to serve
them. You need to serve them at a price they appreciate
while leaving some "margin" for yourself. If you don't run
a tight ship, no matter how much you love it, and no matter
how much your customers love you, in the end your business
is going down.

So, crunch the numbers. Design an elegant marketing
campaign. Check your pricing and keep a tight reign on
costs, but in the end all of those things are the details.
They can be learned; in some cases they can be delegated or
even contracted out. (Be careful about that, but sometimes
it can be done.)

The key to long-term success is loving what you do and
having a genuine, top-shelf desire to SERVE THE CUSTOMER.
If you do that, the other skills and arrangements can be
learned. First, make sure you have a good reason to be in
business, and then arrange your business plan to make a profit.
