1. The One-Minute TIP

As the seasons change, this is a time to re-commit to our
goals and re-double our efforts. Hard work is the mark of
ambitious people, people who are going someplace. It is the
mark of people who value their contribution and know that
their lives and their hard work make a difference in the world.

2. Welcome Notes

Thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes after the
"bonus" TIPS on Thursday! That wasn't my primary reason for
sending it - I wanted to invite all of you to the two

several dozen emails, electronic cards and even a few
Hallmark cards! Thanks for all of them!

While many subscribers will be off celebrating the long
Labor Day weekend and won't see this, I do want to extend
special last-minute invitations to each of you:

3:  In Celebration of Hard Work

Over the years I've heard all the phrases about how
achievement should be "effortless." One observation I do
like is that "when you do what you truly love, you'll never
work another day the rest of your life." There is great
truth in that!

But let's be honest. Achievement, success, and getting
stuff done usually requires work, and sometimes it requires
lots of hard, hard - really hard - work!

Sure, it's nice when we find smart, efficient ways to
minimize the work. And it's wonderful when the work "sort
of feels" like play. I'm a fan of Csikszentmihalyi's work
on the psychology of "flow" or "being in the zone." There
are times when everything is easy and productivity soars
and results seem effortless. Those are incredible
experiences and we all value them!

I wish we could have more of them!

The reality, however, is that building a business or
raising children, or sustaining a marriage or getting an
education are long-term projects that require hard,
sustained, discipline work. There is no getting around

Now, most of us work a LOT! I would never minimize the
commitment TIPS subscribers have to hard work!

Most of the people I talk with work too much! As a coach, I
often encourage my clients to take time for play and re-
creation. So this is not some mean-spirited accusation that
anyone is lazy!

I'm not even sure what the word "lazy" means!

People work really, really hard.

Rather, this is a reminder of two important principles:

First, we do work hard and we deserve to be honored for it.
Entrepreneurs often work 60, 70, 80 or more hours every
week! Managers often work just as long. Teachers,
therapists, anyone in sales - we all work long hours and
I'm not sure we give ourselves enough credit for it.

This weekend, we Americans (and Canadians and others)
celebrate "Labor Day" and that is a good thing! Acknowledge
how hard you work, and give yourself a pat on the back. You
deserve it!

Secondly, hard work is the mark of a free and ambitious
people. Hard work is what we invest for the future, and it
is a GOOD thing!

Hard work is the price life demands for excellence. Hard
work is the price of superior results. Hard work is the
price of pride in our achievements.

Sometimes, especially when we get tired, we look for the
"easy way" or for short-cuts. We wish life could be easier,
and of course, being efficient and skilled is a GOOD
thing! But most of the time, life requires that we invest
our time and labor in the faith that we are building
something worthwhile.

As we enter the fall (in the Northern hemisphere), this is
a season for focus and re-commitment. As school opens and
we come back from vacation and the seasons change, it is
time to re-commit to our goals and re-double our efforts.
Hard work is the mark of ambitious people, people who are
going someplace. It is the mark of people who value their
contribution and know that their lives and their hard work
make a difference in the world.

This weekend, pause and enjoy the Labor Day Weekend! Relax!
Have fun, enjoy a barbeque or ball game!

And on Tuesday, be proud of going back to WORK!

4. Quotes of the Week

"The difference between the impossible and the possible
lies in a person's determination."
                                      -- Tommy LaSorda

"The question is not whether we will die, but how we will live."
                                      -- Joan Borysenko

"Achievement seems to be connected with action. Successful
men and women keep moving. They make mistakes, but they
don't quit."
                                      -- Conrad Hilton

"What gets measured, gets done."
                                      -- Edward Deming

5. Strictly Business:   Marketing Vs. Getting Clients

Last week, David Steele generously offered his seminar on
"How To Get Clients" for TIPS subscribers and one of the
many things he pointed out is the essential distinction
between "marketing" and "selling."

As I got it, marketing is about letting people know you
exist. It's about telling them who you are, what you do,
and helping them really "get" your expertise. It's about
branding your name and reputation; it's about creating
positive buzz about your and your business.

Marketing is a good thing! It's a skill and it can be
learned. Every business MUST market!

Marketing, however, does not generate sales or revenue
and that is a HUGE distinction!

As David says, "You can market until the cows come home and
never get a single client!" You can market so people know
about you, and know what you do. You can market with a
catchy slogan and a distinctive logo. You can market "until
the cows come home."

But only sales is sales!

Now, obviously there are good and bad ways of selling.
There are styles of selling and some sales techniques are
just plain repugnant!

Fortunately, however, there are skills and tools that are
both comfortable AND effective for selling. Many people ask
questions to help the potential customer decide for
themselves whether to make the purchase. Others use a focus
on the benefits or some other ethical tool to MAKE THE

In the end, your business must do marketing, AND you must
make sales. Understand the distinction and develop skills
in both areas!

For info on ethical, professional (and comfortable) ways to
make more sales and get more clients, consider buying
David's "How To Get Clients Toolkit." It's small and
efficient and more importantly, it's effective!

6. Resources and Tools for YOUR Success!

#1    The Road to Wealth 4-Week Program!
        Begins This Tuesday, Sept 7th!

Managing our personal finances is one of the most
fundamental and mis-understood tasks of adult life. It's
like the weather - "everyone talks about money, but no one
does anything about it." I want to change that!

Managing money is not difficult! There is LOTS of money
around! Attracting some of it takes a bit of skill, but
there is no mystery - other people have done it and so can
you. The mystery is in KEEPING IT! Money is like water - if
we aren't careful (and skilled) it runs through our fingers
and disappears. It evaporates. It can leave us "high and
dry," wondering what ever happened to all that money we
thought we had!

I've been teaching The Road to Wealth for many years now
and it has helped hundreds of people (1) earn a bit more,
(2) manage and track what they have, so that (3) they keep
more money, invest wisely and retire wealthy.

This program is about understanding how money works, how
taxes impact our plans, how investments and how simple
routines can create a LOT of wealth. ANYONE can do this!
Read "The Millionaire Next Door!" There are thousands and
thousands of people who are doing very well indeed - and
they are no different than you or me. They simply know and
follow a few basic disciplines every day and that is what
this class is all about.

To encourage you to take immediate action (the class starts
this Tuesday!), I created a special 25% discount. Just
click on the link below and you will automatically be sent
to a special page. When you click the "Register Now" button
you will see a $20 discount automatically subtracted from
the purchase price! It's my gift to you and I hope you'll
jump on this!

time-ever discount at:

#2    Coaching Group Starts Sept 13th!
Get More Done! Achieve Your Goals! Take Action!

I normally offer coaching groups only three times a year
and the fall group filled up so quickly, that I've agreed
to do a second group and YOU are invited!

CGI groups have been "the key" for hundreds of people over
the years. The power of a structured coaching program
combined with the encouragement, accountability and SUPPORT
of a small group is incredibly powerful! If you are ready
to "go for it" this fall, I hope you'll join us!

If you are ready to make dramatic changes, join us! If you
are ready to focus, set attainable goals, and GET STUFF
DONE, take action, check it out and join us!

The group is "semi-structured." I bring lessons and an
agenda to each call. There is reading material each week.
And we have time for members to celebrate their wins, get
individual, personal coaching on their situation, and get
the SOLUTIONS that have worked for other people.

The "TEAM" stands for:

And it's true. This process has been "like a miracle" for
many participants over the years. If you are ready, check
it out, and send me an email to set up an interview and
become a member of our TEAM!

Get the info at:

And, if you know you want in, just send me an email and
let's get started! Contact me at:

#3   Make Money From Your Current Website!
       (It's getting MUCH easier!)

I'm a "raving fan" of this system that makes it EASY to
sell my tapes, register people for my classes, and create
my affiliate program, and I want to give you a free tour -
and you can use the system FREE for 30 days! The owner is
Don Schnure, and he has an amazing "system" for helping me
make money with my website and newsletter, without having
to be a techno-wizard. I use the shopping cart, the
affiliate program (took less than an hour to set up!), and
the broadcast modules. It's so cool! Click here for the tour.

7. Humor:   Brain Cramps

From time to time, we all say really dumb things.
Fortunately, most of these aren't recorded for posterity,
but for a few special individuals, their silliest remarks
are preserved for all time. My friend, Pat Hommel, sent
these to me I couldn't resist sharing them. They are NOT
intended to ridicule any person, political party or point
of view. They are just funny, silly things that some very
smart people have said under pressure. Enjoy them!

"Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very
important part of your life." --Brooke Shields, during an
interview to become spokesperson for a federal anti-smoking

"I've never had major knee surgery on any other part of my
body." --Winston Bennett, University of Kentucky basketball

"Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest
crime rates in the country." --Mayor Marion Barry,
Washington, DC.

"I'm not going to have some reporters pawing through our
papers. We are the president." --Hillary Clinton commenting
on the release of documents.

"That lowdown scoundrel deserves to be kicked to death by a
jackass, and I'm just the one to do it." --A congressional
candidate in Texas.

"Half this game is ninety percent mental." --Philadelphia
Phillies manager, Danny Ozark

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's
the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."
-- Al Gore, Vice President

"I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix."
-- Dan Quayle

"We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air
do we need?"--Lee Iacocca

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."
--Bill Clinton, President

"We are ready for an unforeseen event that may or may not
occur." --Al Gore, Vice President

"Your food stamps will be stopped effective March 1992
because we received notice that you passed away. May God
bless you. You may reapply if there is a change in your
circumstances." --Department of Social Services,
Greenville, South Carolina

Question: If you could live forever, would you and why?
Answer: "I would not live forever, because we should not
live forever, because if we were supposed to live forever,
then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever,
which is why I would not live forever," --Miss Alabama in
the 1994 Miss USA contest.

Be kind to yourself and to someone else, and have a
wonder-FULL week!
