1. The One-Minute TIP

Make a commitment to do the things that bring you joy. Do
the things that make you happy! Typically, these are things
like spending time with loved ones, or teaching a child.
Meditation and worship are vital for many people, along
with exercise, movement and play. Volunteer to help someone
who needs a hand and share your talents and skills, and
wealth, in ways that SERVE others.

2. Welcome Notes

About every three months, as the seasons change, I write
that "this" is my favorite time of year, so once again as
autumn comes to Oregon, I notice how magnificent the days
are. Our oak trees are beginning to turn color. As I played
golf this week, the trees along one fairway took my breath
away! While I miss the bright mornings of summer, as Cody
and I walked this morning the stars were shining brightly
and there was a wonderful crispness in the air. What a
glorious time of year!

In the southern hemisphere, our friends "down under" are
enjoying spring and I was talking with a client in
Australia this week about the glory of their beaches.

Wherever you are, take a moment this week to enjoy nature.
Take a friend for a picnic or a drive in the country. Take
a sandwich and have lunch in your favorite park or walk on
a beach, and be grateful. We may live on a small planet
circling an obscure star in a corner of the galaxy, but
what a terrific planet it is!

And a REQUEST: If you enjoy TIPS, please encourage your
friends and colleagues to subscribe. We do no advertising
and our growth over the years has come from "word of mouth."
Anyone can subscribe by simply sending an email to:  and here's an even BETTER way:

3:  For Joy, Pleasure and Satisfaction

This week a long-time subscriber sent me a wonderful email
pointing out how "serious" recent issues of TIPS have been.
We've talked about goals and about focus, about Ben
Franklin's life-long pursuit of 13 virtues, and about
making money. When, this reader asked, was I going to get
back to having FUN!?

The Bible reminds us that we cannot live "by bread alone."
Human beings are complex creatures and when we get out of
balance we lose our "edge." In Tim Gallway's book, The
Inner Game of Golf, he says that as a professional tennis
player, his right arm was twice as developed as his left.
That might be fine for tennis, but in golf it didn't help
him a bit, and actually created problems.

The same is true in life.

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" and Jill an
unhappy girl!

Now, I love the fact that Americans and TIPS subscribers
around the world work so hard! We are the most productive,
most goal-oriented, ambitious people in the world and that
is a GOOD thing! There are REASONS we are the richest, most
blessed people in history!

Yes, we consume too much and create too much trash - I
didn't say we were perfect. But our freedom, combined with
our ambition and our hard work have created a system that
is the envy of the world. Even the very poorest have access
to books and education unheard of in our grandparent's
time, or in most of the world today. We are wealthy beyond
measure, and that wealth is the result of our hard WORK.
Good for us!

And, we know something about play and pleasure. In the
summer we flock to the beaches and crowd our parks. In the
winter, we ski and head for the tropics. In simpler ways,
we watch television and attend sporting events, we go to
movies, theaters and out to dinner until our credit cards
are worn out.

So, we know about work (lots of it!) and we know about
short-term pleasure (lots of it).

What do we know about long-term happiness?

From time to time I read news articles that depression and
even suicide are on the rise. I've heard that among our
teenagers, suicide is a leading cause of death! Our divorce
rates are too high. Our addiction to alcohol, drugs and
gambling is a national tragedy.

I am not sure we are a "happy" people, and yet happiness is
one of the easiest of all goals to achieve.

All of us want a sense of joy and fulfillment, a sense that
our lives have meaning and purpose and significance, and WE
CAN HAVE THAT! But it rarely comes from making more money,
any more than it comes from drinking alcohol or watching

Make a commitment to do the things that bring you joy. Do
the things that make you happy! Typically, these are things
like spending time with loved ones, or teaching a child.
Meditation and worship are vital for many people, along
with exercise, movement and play. Volunteer to help someone
who needs a hand and share your talents and skills, and
wealth, in ways that SERVE others.

My own list includes things like writing TIPS each week,
walking my dog at sunrise and cuddling with Mary at the end
of the day. I find joy in reading and learning, and yes, I
love my work. (And my golf.) The key is balance based on a
conscious decision to create and live a happy life.
Generally these things are free or very inexpensive, and
they pay extraordinary dividends. Go for the joy!

4. Quotes of the Week

"Better than a thousand useless words is one single word
that gives peace."
                                       -- The Buddha

"Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds
from the achievement of one's values."
                                       -- Ayn Rand

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment
to improve the world."
                                       -- Anne Frank

"Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get,
only with what you are expected to give... Which is everything."
                                       -- Katharine Hepburn

5. Strictly Business:  The Dividends of Courtesy

I continue to be struck by how simple it is to stand out,
make the sale and succeed in business. Too often we talk
about how hard and competitive and even ruthless business
is, but that has not been my experience.

The most successful people in business are usually people
who know the value of relationships and they are very, very
gracious people.

That certainly doesn't mean they are perfect or that they
don't see and seize opportunity, but in general the most
successful people realize they are in business for the long-
haul and they know the advantage of creating win-win
bargains whenever possible.

It is simply too expensive to find new customers, and no
business can flourish if every sale has to be to a "new"
customer! The real profits come from the easy repeat sales
to customers who know and trust you, who find it easy to do
business with you, and who have no reason to haggle or fret
over price, quality or guarantees. They simply call you up,
place an order and enjoy having at least one thing in their
day that was "easy."

Here are a couple of easy things that can make all the

1. Take a moment to address your email to the recipient
with an appropriate salutation. "Dear Phil" takes only a
moment and is so much more polite than leaving it off.

2. Sign your email! We have a long-standing policy of
ignoring email that is not signed and I think unsigned
email is simply rude.

3. Avoid using cell phones whenever possible. Never make
your customer (or anyone) struggle to hear and understand
you! Using a cell phone to make calls as you drive or do
other things "to save time" is neither safe nor considerate.

4. Look for ways to personalize every transaction, even if
it's just a quick note that says, "Thank you!" Follow-up
your sale with a phone call or include a small gift, but
try to make every customer glad they did business with you.

These things are not "rocket science." They are the simple
courtesies that successful businesses have always used to
"get an edge" on the competition. Now you know.

6. Resources and Tools for YOUR Success!

#1    BEST BOOKS Newsletter
Get hundreds of dollars for buying a GREAT Book!

For almost a year I've been publishing a periodic
newsletter of book reviews and discounts, and you are
invited! Almost 3000 people already subscribe!

Every few weeks I publish reviews of the BEST BOOKS I've
come across, and here's the bonus -- as more author's
market their own books, they are creating massive lists of
"bonuses" and "gifts" as a reward for buying their book on
a given day! Last Tuesday, for instance, I wrote about an
offer that had over $2000 (Whoa!) in bonuses for helping
the author achieve "best seller" status, but the only way
to get it is to subscribe to BEST BOOKS. (Lots of authors
do this; be assured that I personally read every book I
review and only recommend books that are a great value with
or without the bonuses.)

You'll get my review of some great books you might have
missed otherwise, and from time to time you can get
hundreds of dollars in bonuses! What a deal! I hope you'll
join us. For more info and to subscribe, visit:

#2     Think Right Now!
The Best Tools for CHANGE I've Found!

Many of you have purchased these audio programs to increase
sales, lose weight, set and achieve goals or improve diet,
health and fitness and you know how good they are! My
clients turned me on to these CD's several months ago and
I'm incredibly impressed. I strongly urge you to jump on
this! Top achievers in every field listen to audio
programs. They imagine themselves winning, getting new
records and living the life they truly WANT, and they do it
by visualizing their victories in advance with the help of
Mike's programs. These are fantastic, both for yourself and
as gifts. Grab these!

#3    Got a Website?
        Earn Passive Income!

Over the years, I've paid lots of money for shopping carts,
autoresponders and systems that were supposed to help me
serve my subscribers and make money from my website. None
of them worked, or more accurately they worked, but they
were complex, confusing and didn't work very well. Then I
discovered Don Schnure and the amazing programs he's put
together. They work! They are powerful, EASY to use, and
they let me automate my newsletter, my affiliate programs
and my shopping cart, with no hassle! I love this! And, you
can use it for 30 days to check it out. Highly recommended!

7. Humor:    Wanna Hear A Good Story?

William Barrows sent this to me and for some reason it made
me laugh out loud. The timing must have been right or
something! Hope you enjoy it.

A couple was awakened at 3 o'clock in the morning by a loud
pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door
where he finds a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring
rain, is asking for a push.

"Not a chance, it's three o'clock in the morning," says the
husband as he slams the door and returns to bed.

"Who was that?" asks his wife.

"Just some drunk asking for a push," he answers.

"Did you help him?" she asks.

"No I didn't help him. It's three in the morning and it is
pouring of rain outside!"

Says the wife, "Don't you remember about three months ago
when we broke down and those two guys helped us? I think
you should be ashamed of yourself! You should help him."

The man does as he is told, gets dressed and goes out into
the pouring rain. He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are
you still there?"

"Yes" comes back the answer.

"Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband.

"Yes, please!" comes the reply from the darkness.

"Where are you?" asks the husband.

"Over here on the swing!!!"

Be kind to yourself and to someone else, and have a
wonder-FULL week!
