1. The One-Minute TIP

This week, Americans celebrate our Thanksgiving holiday,
and it is not only a favorite holiday, but one of tremendous
significance. It reminds us that we are a fortunate, blessed,
and extremely POWERFUL people not because of our army or
navy, but because of our gratitude. Thanksgiving, joy, power,
adventure, even love itself are the source of true success
in life. Thanksgiving lets us take chances. It energizes
and liberates us.

2. Welcome Notes

This week, I finally went to the doctor for a sore ankle
that has been bothering me for months. Sometimes it got
better, sometimes worse, but I kept procrastinating about
seeing the doctor. I suppose it was partly resistance to
asking for help, partly stubbornness, whatever, but I could
have crippled myself for life. It turns out I have a severe
case of Achilles tendonitis that could have snapped the
tendon at any time.

Fortunately, I've got a brace, I get to lay on the couch
with my foot up and get waited on "hand and foot" for the
next few weeks. How cool is that?! I can do some writing,
read lots of books, maybe watch some movies I've been
meaning to watch. Life is good! And lesson learned: Go see
the doctor!

I took a foolish chance and delayed my healing by "putting
it off." Don't do that!

And another confession. Last week I recommended my free
ebook, "Goal-Setting 101" but had a typo in the link.
Dozens of you wrote about the error and I apologize for the
frustration. Here's the correct link:  Enjoy!

And finally, lots of you bought Dawn Angier's book on
"Effective Presentations" and I love the feedback I've
gotten. We all have to do presentations from time to time,
and many of us don't like it and aren't very good at it.
That's a shame! Whether you speak regularly or only once a
year to your office staff, buy and use this wonderful
little guide! You (and your audience) will be glad you did.

3:  The Extraordinary Power of Gratitude

Over the years, one of the great mysteries I've observed is
the relationship between gratitude and power.

Far too often, we link gratitude with a sense of relief or
weakness and I think that's a mistake. In my opinion,
gratitude is one of the great sources of energy, creativity
and power known to man, and unlike other energy forms, it's
free and available whenever we choose to access it.

Whenever I work with top performers, one of the things I
notice is their sense of appreciation, humility, and
gratitude. Now, obviously, we have all seen people who are
rich or powerful and do not appear to be grateful.

I remember seeing a famous actor in a Palm Springs country
club being rude to an employee. For all his fame and good
looks, something seemed "off" about that brief interaction
and it didn't surprise me when, a few months later, his
career collapsed in an arrest, divorce and substance abuse
problems. As a wise man once said, "Pride goeth before a

On the other hand, one of the marks of true success is a
sense of perspective. Truly successful people often
remember their humble beginnings, or appreciate that for
all their wealth or power, they depend on the skills of
other people to run their operations. They are able to
appreciate the "little things" and understand that life is
short and full of unexpected twists and turns.

One of the things that has surprised me about Donald
Trump's show, "The Apprentice" is the consistently nice
things the contestants have had to say about Mr Trump.
While he often seems angry or arrogant on television, the
interviews I've seen suggest that is not the whole picture.
In person, I've understand he treats people well, has a
good sense of humor and is very generous.

Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks and President Jimmy
Carter come to mind as examples of famous people who
appear, at least when I've seen them interviewed, to be
"ordinary people." They understand the power of gratitude.

Here's the thing. There are basically three ways to face
life, and our "stance" makes all the difference.

We can face life with arrogance, believing that we are the
center of the universe. Usually, life teaches us otherwise.

Or, we can face life with a sense of fear and
powerlessness. Obviously, this stance inhibits action and
gets little or nothing done.

Finally, we can come at life from a stance of gratitude and
wonder. Curiosity may have "killed the cat" but it also
invented the light bulb, airplanes and tennis balls.
Curiosity and creativity, it seems to me, come from a
fundamental stance of joy, gratitude, thanksgiving and
excitement about life.

Arrogance and fear stifle creativity. If we "know it all"
there's nothing to learn and we never grow. If we live in
fear, life is about hunkering down and protecting
ourselves, and we never adventure out. Only gratitude can
stimulate growth, curiosity and joy.

This week, Americans celebrate our Thanksgiving holiday,
and it is not only a favorite holiday, but one of
tremendous significance. It reminds us that we are a
fortunate, blessed, and extremely POWERFUL people not
because of our army or navy, but because of our gratitude.
Thanksgiving, joy, power, adventure, even love itself are
the source of true success in life. Thanksgiving lets us
take chances. It energizes and liberates us.

This week, practice the "attitude of gratitude" and see
what you can unleash.

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment
to improve the world."

"Go to the truth beyond the mind. Love is the bridge."
                                      -- Stephen Levine

"Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get,
only with what you are expected to give... which is everything."
                                      -- Katharine Hepburn

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human
being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind!"

5. Strictly Business:   The Shape Of Things To Come

Have you set your targets for 2006? It's the end of the
year, and if you don't review your numbers and set your
targets for next year real soon, my experience is that you
may never get it done.

The next few weeks are filled with holidays, travel, time
off, family reunions and year-end distractions. It's easy
to get caught up and forget the necessary chore of
crunching your numbers, and unfortunately, few things are
more costly than sailing a ship without a rudder, a course
or a destination.

Far too often in business, entrepreneurs and professionals
get so focused on their daily work that they forget they
are the "captains" of the ship. I love the old phrase,
"Captains of industry." The phrase was widely used in the
19th century, but I think it applies even more today.

Thousands of TIPS subscribers are professionals running
their own practice, or entrepreneurs who have invested
their time, talents and money to start a small business.
They've literally put everything at risk, and they work
very hard - often 60 hours a week or more - to be
successful. And often it's that strong work ethic that
undermines their long-term success.

We all know the phrase, "majoring in minor things," and you
don't want to do that to yourself.

As an owner, manager or entrepreneur, take time to review
your measurables - sales, profits, and new products, at a
minimum - and set your course for 2006. You'll be glad you did.

And, as you plan for the new year, if coaching might make
next year more successful than 2005 has been, give me a
call or drop me an email. We'll work together to set
appropriate targets, develop strategies and stay on course.

7. Humor:    A REAL Thank You!

We all get far too much spam and junk in our email, so it
made me smile when Paul Vogt forwarded this tongue-in-cheek
compilation of some of the best scams around. Read and
enjoy it, just remember - it's only a JOKE! <g>

My heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of you who have
taken the time
and trouble to send me "forwards" over the past 12 months.
Thank you
for making me feel safe, secure, blessed, and wealthy.

Extra thanks to whoever sent me the one about rat excrement
in the glue on envelopes because I now have to get a wet
sponge every time I seal an envelope.

Also, I scrub the top of every can I open for the same
reason. Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola
because it can remove toilet stains.

I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr. Pepper since the people who
make these products are atheists who refuse to put "Under
God" on their cans. I no longer use Saran wrap in the
microwave because it causes cancer.

I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I
smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone might drug
me with a perfume sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from nor send packages by UPS
or FedEx since they are actually Al Qaeda in disguise.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to
dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with calls
to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore, and Uzbekistan.

I no longer eat KFC because their "chickens" are actually
horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers.

I no longer have any sneakers -- but that will change once
I receive my free replacement pair from Nike.

I no longer worry about my soul because at last count I
have 363,214 angels looking out for me.

Thanks to you, I have learned that God only answers my
prayers if I forward an e-mail to seven of my e-
mail friends and make a wish within five minutes.

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick
girl who is about to die in the hospital (for the
1,387,258th time).

I no longer have any money at all - but that will change
once I receive the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL are
sending me for participating in their special e-mail

Yes, I want to thank you so much for looking out for me
that I will now want to return the favor!

If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144 people in the
next 10 minutes, a large pigeon with a wicked case of
diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM (EST) this
afternoon. I know this will occur because it actually
happened to a friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-
in-law's second husband's cousin's beautician.

.... So THERE! And, Thank You Again! Have a great day!

Be kind to yourself and to someone else, and have a
wonder-FULL week!
