1. The One-Minute TIP

Who do you know who knows someone. . .who needs your
products or services? Who do you know who knows someone
who. . .can teach you or open doors, or finance your business?
In an era of working from home, commuting by ourselves and
often living far from family, too often we fall into the
trap of thinking we have to do everything by ourselves. The
truth is we are not alone unless we choose to be.

2. Welcome Notes

Have you written a letter (or email) to Congress or your
local paper lately? In America, this is our mid-term
election season and things are heating up. It's time to get

I'm a political junky. I don't follow sports or lots of
other "All-American" passions, so perhaps I'm genetically
weird or warped, call it what you will, but I love politics.
And across our nation, thousands of candidates need your
help. From your local school board or city council, to
Governor's races and candidates for Congress and the Senate,
thousands of good--and not so good--people are offering to
serve and asking for your vote.

Get involved. Get energized and above all, get informed.
Find someone you can support and write them a check, put a
sign in your front yard, or pass out literature for them. I
do this a lot. Mary "doesn't like" politics and is far less
involved, but in our own way, we try to do our part. I have
my favorite party, candidates and positions, and yours may
be very different. The point is that this is a uniquely
American tradition and opportunity. Don't waste it!

TIPS subscribers are not "ordinary" people. As a group, we
are ambitious, educated, informed and pro-active. As a
group, we do stuff! Get involved in politics at least to the
degree of supporting your favorite candidates. Your
community, and our nation, will be better for it.

Finally, lots of people accepted my invitation to inquire
about coaching this week. A few turned out to be "perfect"
candidates and I'm excited to work with them, and the others
I referred to coaches who, I hope, will be perfect for them.
I still have one more opening and if you have goals and
projects that are important to you and it's time to get
serious, stay focused, achieve more and finish the year
strong, get a coach! If you'd like to work with me, email me

3: Who Do You Know And Who Do They Know?

Last week I wrote about the unsung heroes in our midst and
focused on Joe Desch and his work on the German "Enigma"
code during WW II. This week I received a wonderful email
from a woman who worked in that very building!

Most of us underestimate the power of our networks. There's
a well-known trivia game called Six Degrees of Separation,
in which the goal is to show that any two people can be
"linked" with no more than six connections. This week I told
a friend that I'd heard from a woman who worked where Desch
worked during the war. Kelly replied that he once lived next
to a member of Senator Ted Kennedy's staff, and so he was
"only two steps from several Presidents and the Queen of
England!" I guess that makes me only three steps from the
power and privilege of the Kennedy's!

So, who are you "close" to? After all, since you know me (at
least through TIPS) that makes you only three steps from Ted
Kennedy and only four steps from everyone he knew!

In difficult economic times, the power and value of our
networks is more important than ever before.

As a coach, I've learned that the right question, asked in
the right way and at the right time, can be more powerful
than any specific fact or piece of information. Asking the
right question in the right way can change our perspective,
open doors and create those wonderful moments that make life
so rich. One of the most powerful questions I've discovered
is, "Who do you know who . . . ?"

Too often we ask for help or assistance directly. We ask,
"Will you help me?" or worse, "Why won't you help me?"
(Notice how the brain automatically starts listing of the
reasons NOT to help?) The way we phrase our questions often
determines the answer in advance.

In tough economic times, the question "Who do you know
who...?" can be worth a fortune! Instead of putting the
other person on the spot, it invites them to be creative,
thoughtful and resourceful. "Who do you know who needs my
services?" Or, "Who do you know who I could contact about a
new job?"

Speaking of which, Who do you know who. . .should subscribe
to TIPS? Will you forward this issue to them and encourage
them to subscribe by using the form at the top of my
homepage at: (Thank you in

This concept of Six Degrees of Separation can be extremely
powerful. It can move us from isolation to community. It can
move us from scarcity to abundance, and from weakness to
incredible creative power.

There's an ancient story I often use in my work. It about an
old farmer who was on his death-bed and gathered his six
children around him. He handed each a small stick, and asked
them to break it. The sticks snapped easily. He then took
six similar sticks and bound them together with a cord. He
handed the bundle to his eldest son, asking him to break the
bundle. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't do it. The
old man then passed the bundle to each child in turn, asking
them to break the bundle in half. None of them could do it.

The old man then pointed out that individually, any of us
can be "broken" by the challenges of life. But in community
we find our strength and are tougher than anything life can
throw at us. There is great truth in that!

So, once again, Who do you know who knows someone? Who do
you know who knows someone...who needs your products or
services? Who do you know who...can teach you or open doors,
or finance your business? I love our tradition of self-
reliance and individualism. It's a wonderful heritage that
has contributed much to our nation and to our lives. But in
an era of working from home, commuting by ourselves and
often living far from family, too often we fall into the
trap of thinking we have to do everything on our own. The
truth is that we are not alone unless we choose to be.

Nurture your community. Reach out to friends, and to friends
of friends! Expand your circle and you empower your world.

"Every day do something that will inch you closer to a
better tomorrow."
-- Doug Firebaugh

"Each one of us has a fire in our heart for something. It's
our goal in life to find it and to keep it lit."
-- Mary Lou Retton

"Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your
strength lies."
-- Mother Teresa

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment

5. Strictly Business: Eliminate the Bottleneck!

In any process, there is an upper limit to how powerful the
results can be, and the limit is always the same: A

In watering your garden, the smallest point limits how much
water passes through the hose. The bottleneck may be the
valve on the side of your house, the diameter of the hose,
or the little washer inside the coupling. Wherever the
bottleneck occurs, it limits the flow through the entire
hose, and the solution is always the same: increase the flow
at that one critical point, and the results are instant and

No matter how smart or skilled you are, something limits the
success you will achieve. There may be several points of
"friction", but there is always one item that limits you
more than all the others combined! Fix it and the results
are amazing!

Here are 4 common bottlenecks:

1. Not Acting as a Business. Many professionals and
entrepreneurs have a dream, not a business. They work
without focus, without clear priorities, and without
results. The bottleneck is lack of clarity. Work the

2. Ineffective Marketing. If you aren't getting enough
inquiries, the bottleneck is in your advertising. Find a way
to let more of your most desired customers know about you.
Everyone wants great service at a fair price! Help them find

3. Ineffective Sales Technique. If lots of folks show up,
ask questions, and compliment your work, but don't buy, your
bottleneck is closing the sale. Work with a sales coach, buy
books or get a mentor, but fix this! Mary Kay Ashe said,
"Nothing happens until someone sells something!"

4. Inadequate Value Added. This is probably the hardest one
to admit, but if people try your product or service, but
donít become steady customers, something is wrong. To
achieve unusual success, you must transform casual customers
into life-long partners. It may be a problem with your
pricing or your delivery, but it must be fixed!

What bottleneck is holding you back in your work, and in
your life?

Stuck? Consider working with a coach to eliminate the
bottlenecks that stand between you and the success you
deserve! Every winner has a coach! For an initial

#2 Make Your Website Work BETTER!
Earn Passive Income!

Over the years, I've paid lots of money for shopping carts,
autoresponders and systems that were supposed to help me
serve my subscribers and make money from my website. They
all worked (sort of), but they were complex, confusing and
didn't work very well. Then I discovered Don Schnure and the
amazing programs he's put together. They work! They are
powerful, EASY to use, and they let me automate my
newsletter, my affiliate programs and my shopping cart, with
no hassle! I love this! And, you can use it for 30 days to
check it out. Highly recommended! (Full disclosure -- I earn
a commission if you sign up for 1Automation, but I've used
it for years and recommend it because it's worked really,
really well for me.)
